Route 705

An experience around every bend ...

Route 705 connects the Røros region and the E6 European Highway. This beautiful road takes you past great lakes, rivers teeming with fish, wild mountains, deep forests, small hamlets and wide, rural expanses. Allow yourself a break on the journey and experience more of everything that Tydal and Selbu have to offer!

On the Langsvola mountain pass, between Tydal and the World Heritage Site of Røros, you can enjoy magnificent views of the mountain border towards Sweden and the Sylan massif. If you would like to experience nature from the back of a horse, there are two riding centres in Stugudal, at the far end of Tydal. Tydal and Selbu have several rural museums and at Tydal museum the tragic story is told about the ‘Karoliners’, the 3,000 soldiers of General-Lieutenant Carl Gustav Armfeldt who perished in a snow storm on an ill-fated march across the Tydal mountains at Christmas in 1718. Lake Selbusjøen, over 30 km long, has plenty of opportunities for excellent fishing and other recreational activities. By the Nea broads, one of Europe’s best trout rivers, you will find Selbutunet golf course. The original Selbuvotten (mittens) and other traditional items of knitwear can be bought at Selbu Husflid (Arts & Crafts). Along this road, where nature and culture experiences await you around each bend, you will find several pleasant cafés and restaurants, some of them offering local specialities. If you require accommodation, you can stay at Væktarstua Hotell, Selbusjøen Hotel & Gjestegård, several camping grounds and some farms.

Bon voyage on route 705!

A peaceful landscape

When you leave the mountain settlement of Røros, known everywhere for its outstanding nature, culture and history, your journey will take you towards Brekken or Glåmos and onto route 705. From here, the road gradually rises, the trees are further and further apart, until finally only scrub-like dwarf birch remains. Now, increasingly, you will catch glimpses of the high mountains. Over the Langsvola mountain, between Røros and Tydal, several road signs warn motorists of the danger of large herds of reindeer. Perhaps you will be one of the lucky ones who experience these proud animals at close quarters?

From Stugudal, the village on the idyllic Lake Stuggusjøen, and down through Tydal, you will pass by small and large hamlets along the road, which follow the Nea river system. Between Tydal and Selbu, the forest-clad, narrow river valley gradually transforms itself into an open landscape. Selbu, with Lake Selbusjøen as a natural central point, is characterised by a traditional cultivated landscape.

Tydal Tydal

Gateway to the high mountains

The mountain parish of Tydal has something unique and exotic about it. Perhaps this has something to do with the powerful, alpine Sylan massif that has enticed tourists since the 19th century. But could it also have something to do with the people who live here? "There is something fresh and untainted about these village folk, something so original, so simply delightful", the poet Theodor Caspari wrote about Tydal in his travel memoirs in the early 1900s. Maybe it’s no surprise, then, that Tydal’s population grows from 900 to 5,000 during Easter. Surrounded by friendly local citizens, beautiful mountains, lengthy plateaux, lakes and rivers teeming with fish, you will feel welcome!

Tydal’s many gravel roads are well-suited to cycling. These will take you very far into our mountainous areas. Read more at www.hikeandbike.no.

TYDAL ACTIVITY CALENDAR

Welcome to the happy land of
Selbu
Selbu

In Selbu, you are surrounded by rich and lush nature, silence and plenty of fresh air. Along the Nea River and on the hillsides around Lake Selbu live most of our 4,000 inhabitants. On a trip through Selbu, you will encounter lowlands, forest plateaux and mountains. The Nea River twists through gentle bends between fields and pastures. Spruce, pine and birch adorn the mountain chain, and further back, into the blue yonder. There are plenty of opportunities, not least for those with a craving for outdoor life. We can offer no less than 300 fishing waters, large and small, some of them in the Skarvan and Roltdalen National Park. Selbu is also known as a district of sport and culture, with an abundance of activities and events. If you meet us with curiosity and an open mind, you will learn why Selbu is called "the happy land"!
